JayCass OOC - Broke

Cass's sweet question ("Why would Bruce be angry about it?") had quelled the adrenaline charge for several hours. He did not feel nervous at all when he arrived at the Wayne Manor and was escorted to the drawing room.

Jason wished, desperately, that he had a pack of cigarettes now. He didn't let it show. He had been taught too well to show how nervous he was. He also knew Bruce knew him too well – he would note any signs of discomfort. The emergency pack that (he hoped) was in his car would have to wait.

"You don't come to visit very often," Bruce was saying, to round off the chit-chat. "Is there something I can help you with, Jason?"

The old man was getting more tactful with his sons, it seemed. Jason smiled back tactfully in return. "Not help, really; I came to bring you news. I thought you ought to be the first to know." He let this sink in, let Bruce feel trusted and relieved.

The look on the old bat's face, though, was not encouraging; it darkened. Jason fought a leap of anger in his chest. The last four years of marriage had taught him excellent self-control (mostly because Cass was still getting used to feeling things herself, and they found the neighbors complained less if they kept the fights verbal and weren't throwing each other through walls).

"You're not in trouble, are you?"

"Why is it that, every time I come to visit, you think that I've done something wrong?!"

"If you've hurt Cassandra-"

"Bruce! She's pregnant, not paraplegic!"

"... what did you say?"

"... Cass... is pregnant..."

Later, Alfred was kind enough to fetch Jason some cigarettes from the secret stash he kept around just for him. Jason smoked one wearily as Alfred patched up his arm. "I just think screaming it at him was a poor way to go about it, Master Jason…"

"Point taken, Alfred. I still think he would have given me an earful, even if I had said it nicely."
